What Are Chakras?
The word "chakra" comes from Sanskrit, meaning wheel or circle. In many Eastern spiritual traditions — particularly those rooted in yogic philosophy — chakras are described as spinning centres of energy that run along the body's central axis, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
While chakras are a spiritual and energetic concept rather than a physiological one, many people find working with them to be a genuinely useful framework for understanding emotional patterns, physical tension, and areas of personal growth. You don't need to hold any particular belief to benefit from exploring this system — approach it with curiosity and see what resonates.

Signs a Chakra May Be Out of Balance
In this framework, when a chakra is thought to be blocked or overactive, it may express itself through certain patterns:
- Root: Chronic anxiety, financial stress, feeling ungrounded or unsafe
- Sacral: Creative blocks, emotional numbness, or feeling overwhelmed by emotions
- Solar Plexus: Low self-esteem, difficulty setting boundaries, or controlling tendencies
- Heart: Difficulty trusting, loneliness, holding onto resentment
- Throat: Fear of speaking up, talking over others, or feeling unheard
- Third Eye: Difficulty making decisions, brain fog, or ignoring your intuition
- Crown: Feeling disconnected from meaning or purpose, cynicism
Simple Practices for Each Chakra
Grounding the Root
Walk barefoot on grass or soil. Practice standing poses in yoga. Spend deliberate time in nature. Focus your breath into the base of your body.
Opening the Sacral
Engage in creative expression without judgment — painting, dancing, journaling. Spend time near water. Practice hip-opening yoga stretches.
Strengthening the Solar Plexus
Set one boundary this week and honour it. Practice core-strengthening movement. Affirm your own competence by listing three things you handle well.
Nurturing the Heart
Practice loving-kindness meditation. Reach out to someone you care about. Spend time with animals. Practice gratitude journaling.
Freeing the Throat
Sing, hum, or chant — even in private. Practice speaking your honest opinion in low-stakes conversations. Write letters you don't have to send.
Activating the Third Eye
Meditate in silence with focus between the brows. Keep a dream journal. Trust a "gut feeling" this week without over-rationalising it.
Connecting the Crown
Sit in silent meditation or prayer. Spend time with uplifting philosophy or spiritual texts. Practice deep gratitude for simply being alive.
Working With Chakras: A Balanced Approach
You don't need to work on all seven simultaneously. Notice where you feel the most tension, disconnection, or persistent challenge — and start there. The chakra system is a map, not a prescription. Use it as a lens for self-inquiry rather than a rigid diagnosis, and let it gently guide you toward greater wholeness.
